To a lot of parents, that may not come as a surprise, but it has now been proven: children have higher energy levels than professional endurance athletes.

This is why researchers recommend trying to remain a bit of child yourself. After all, it seems to be healthy. Outdoor challenges in particular are good for the development of children’s athletic abilities.

So why not send your children into the great outdoors and work on your own ‘Fitbit’ score a bit at the same time? At Moon Trees, you work as a team in an innovative outdoor game. Every team uses each team member’s qualities so you can also take on a ‘more strategic’ role. If your energy levels are not as high as your child’s Moon Trees is like a computer game, but you’re getting active outdoors.

Blow off steam and have a good night’s sleep later? Unfortunately, that’s not how it works: children also recover faster than endurance athletes. They’re rearing to play again in no time at all.

Did you know that the Moon Trees really did get their special gift from space? Today, it’s 48 years ago that our Moon trees (which were still seeds then) started their trip around the moon.

On 31 January, Apollo 14 went into space with astronauts Alan Shepard Jr., Stuart Roosa and Edgar Mitchell. But they were in the minority because they shared their trip around the moon with 500 tree seeds.

Roosa had been selected especially for this assignment because of his expertise with woods. He was working in forest management and as a forest firefighter. So you could say he was the first real Moon Trees Hero.

Moon Trees space Mission Apollo

Trees from space

His personal kit contained 500 seeds from all sorts of trees. NASA wanted to know if a trip into space would have an impact on the seeds.

On 10 February, the astronauts returned with the Moon Trees. And as it happens, many of the seeds turned into wonderful, tall trees. Distant relatives of the Moon Trees were also planted in special locations across the world, such as the White House in Washington.

The Moon Trees in our woods also have special gifts. They protect the earth, but you do need to look after them well. That’s why you’ll be joining the battle together with your team members: who wins the highest number and the most valuable Moon Trees within the set playing time? Getting hold of raw materials, guarding and conquering Moon Trees demands ultimate teamwork and strategic insight. Will you be the new Moon Trees Heroes?

We hope everyone had a good start of the year. But how do you get the best out of your organisation in 2019? Eventbrite asked 26 event professionals about the trends for the coming year.

One striking aspect is that there’s an even bigger focus on the well-being of personnel. With the (mental) health of personnel high on the agenda of a lot of businesses, we’ll be seeing a lot of this trend in events too.

Team building is the trend for 2019

That’s why team building will play an increasingly bigger role in 2019. That is the prediction of the National Sales Manager of Center Parcs, Dan Elliot: “More and more businesses are coming to Center Parcs for our team-building activities and business outings. Team building at business events is also gaining in popularity. Businesses are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of being outdoors in the fresh air as a team, getting away for the daily grind. If you set your goals beforehand, team building can help you improve the corporate culture. It also shows your appreciation for your staff, both as individuals and for their input in the company.”

Team building in the great outdoors

According to the professionals, team building will increasingly focus on creating positive emotions and interaction among colleagues. Get off those chairs and get active. A memory you won’t forget, that’s the aim. And if at all possible, into the great outdoors.

Gaming in the woods

Would you like to kick off the new year well? From March onwards, you can play Moon Trees in Klimbos Veluwe. Moon Trees is an innovative game using the latest game technology in which players have to work closely together in a real-life game in the Veluwe woods. Every team member can use his personal strengths: speed, strategy, collaboration and more. You continuously switch with your team and aim to achieve the best result together. Conquering more Moon Trees and therefore scoring more points. Which team will be the winner? Let the games begin!

Are you looking for more information about an inspiring team outing? Or perhaps you want to prepare your venue for the latest trends by becoming a Moon Trees venue yourself. We can tell you all about the game. Just send an e-mail to .

Do you want to organise an original children’s party? Children enjoy nothing more than horsing around in the woods. After a wonderfully active game of Moon Trees, there’s so much more to do. What about a picnic in the woods? Or climbing and clambering in the playing field? Organising a party the kids will enjoy is so easy.

Climbing and horsing around

The Moon Trees woods of Klimbos Veluwe can be found in Park Berg & Bos in Apeldoorn. There’s so much to do in this wonderful park. What about younger children? Then head for the playing field, a clearing in the woods with a water pump, a sand pit, a climbing pyramid, swings and much more. There’s plenty of space to run around and play.

Climb the watchtower

Do you still have excess energy? Why not climb up the watchtower on the left, at the end of Jubileumlaan? The tower is 26 metres high and once you’ve climbed all 128 steps, you’ll be higher than the treetops. On a clear day, you can even see Deventer and Zwolle from this serene spot. Magnificent views.

Autumn picnic

You’ll find Bosweide right in the heart of Stadspark Berg & Bos. Events are held here occasionally, but it’s also perfect for picnics away from civilisation. A blanket, hot chocolate in the thermos and coats on. Get ready to play. This area is slightly deeper into the woods, which means you sometimes see wild animals.

Do you want to go on an adventure in the woods themselves? Follow the Kidsnatuurpad (a nature trail) or one of the hiking routes shown on the signs at the entrance. You may even come across a boar or a roe.

The unique game of Moon Trees has been exclusively available in Klimbos Veluwe since June. We interviewed venue manager Julian Schimmelpennink and asked him all sorts of questions: Why Moon Trees? What about the organisation of the game? And most important of all, what do the players think? Julian explains: “Adults in particular are taken aback by how fanatical they become during the game. Moon Trees really is a game for all ages.”

You are the first Moon Trees venue. What was it about the game that convinced you?

“A couple of years ago, an innovation team from Klimbos was looking into potential new activities. That’s how we found Springlab. Our management board and their management board came up with a format to market a new product. Klimbos Veluwe was going to be the test venue. Springlab’s vision is very much like our own; we’re both looking for ways to get people moving through experiences. In Klimbos, that experience mostly focuses on climbing the trees and being active in the great outdoors. Springlab also wants everyone, young and old, to exercise more. And they’ve achieved this by developing an active game that’s so exciting, the exercise comes all by itself.”

What makes Moon Trees so special?

“Even the biggest adult can be a child again. Everyone really gets totally absorbed by the game. It’s quite special how a relatively simple concept gets people so active. Even the adults that really don’t like running were seen racing through the woods. We played Moon Trees on a staff outing in June, and it’s the first time I’ve ever seen my colleagues run. From Moon Tree to Moon Tree. I was pleasantly surprised about how fanatical people get during the game. I think it’s because of the competitive element of the game. The fact that you’re very close together, that you’re time-bound, and that others can steal your Moon Trees. You want to win, don’t you? It’s only human. Sure, you can move at a snail’s pace but you’ll soon find out that you’re faster when you run.”

What about the organisation of Moon Trees?

“The exciting and busy days have now started. I’m responsible for quality and safety in this park, for the staff and the day-to-day maintenance and management of Klimbos. In terms of Moon Trees, I’m mainly responsible for management and coordination. Groups can make a booking via the website. You can also buy at ticket at the entrance, but we prefer people to make a reservation. It’s convenient because that gives me enough time to schedule trained people to come into work for the game. We now have a team of ten staff members who can be deployed for both Klimbos and Moon Trees. Yesterday, a member of staff supervised a group during a game of Moon Trees and after that, she worked in Klimbos for a couple of hours. She really enjoyed the variety. With Moon Trees, you’re more involved compared to the Klimbos activity. In the case of Klimbos, we give instructions to groups but once they start climbing, they follow the routes independently. During Moon Trees, you’re fully engaged with that group throughout the game. Our members of staff supervise the game and give tips. They look to see what the players are doing, who’s lagging behind. We can then help them a bit to get going. The game’s designers also make sure we have a continuous running score on the large dashboard in the game area. This enables the teams to see who has the most points at a single glance. It makes the game even more dynamic.”

How do people who’ve played the game respond?

“Larger groups of eight to ten persons have responded particularly positive. They’re pleasantly surprised by the active game. What I really like is that adults in particular say they never expected to be running around through the woods like a madman trying to steal a couple of trees. They didn’t expect the game to get them going to the extent it does. Children are highly enthusiastic anyway, all they want is to go back and play another game. Bringing your own team to compete against is the most fun. You could bring your family or one or two families who are friends. It makes the competition even more exciting. Another fun aspect is that they can climb the trees at this venue. That’s an element visitors really enjoy. Apart from the fact that it’s an interactive game, you’ll find yourself at a height of five metres without noticing. It’s as if it’s part of the path. The responses are very good, the players really enjoy the experience.”

Who is Moon Trees intended for?

“Moon Trees can be played by a very wide target group, it really is a game for all ages. We’ve had a football team, an entire family and several families who competed against each other. Moon Trees is also ideal for school and staff outings. You can play the game with just four people (two teams of two members), but you can also play with up to seven teams. It’s more fun to keep the groups small, say, four per team.”

Speel Moon Trees wie weet word jij de Moon Trees Hero! | Moon Trees Challenge

How do you play the game?

“Everyone tries to play a tactical game in his own way. One team may decide that one member should stand next to Borag (one of the Moon Trees) and keep a couple of game cabinets occupied so all someone else has to do is check out new cabinets. Another popular technique is for teams to set a timer every two or three minutes, letting them know when they can start collecting raw materials from the Moon Trees. Different teams have their own tactics. So far, we’ve been using two methods of playing the game. The first is that we play brief games of twenty minutes. During the first game, they get an idea of how the game works, which enables them to be more tactical during the second game. The other option is to play a 45-minute game during which teams are given five minutes in advance to discuss tactics and to think about ways to use everyone’s strengths.”

How do you play it with children?

“If you play the game with children, we recommend doing it in steps. We start with a simple game and make it increasingly difficult and active as we go along. First, we explain the aim of the game and how they can conquer a Moon Tree for themselves. Then we start the game. They discover how they can conquer the trees and how the scoring works. The game ends after twenty minutes, and they are then told how they can steal each other’s trees and how they can deal with a game disaster such as an earthquake. During a disaster, Moon Trees go through their raw materials faster, so they need more. Moon Trees is suitable for children aged six or seven but it’s equally fun for sixteen or seventeen-year-olds. During the spring, we had a school group of that age bracket and they all went into the woods running, every single one of them. It’s quite special to see how a game of Moon Trees gets everyone so active.”

Springlab Forest gets people active in the woods with game technology

Moon Trees, the most sophisticated outdoor game in a natural environment is now a fact

After Pokémon Go!, we finally have another outdoor game. And this time, it’s made in the Netherlands. The makers of the game, Springlab and Klimbos Nederland – represented by Springlab Forest – have taken an important step in getting people outside to exercise. Their joint innovation called Moon Trees was launched in Klimbos Veluwe in Apeldoorn on 6 June. Moon Trees is the first outdoor game based on the most recent game technology and it’s played in the woods. A world first.

Valuable role of game technology

During the official Moon Trees kick-off, we looked at the role and the value of game technology when it comes to physical exercise. Dr. Monique Simons, researcher of Digital (Game) Technology for Healthy Urban Living at Utrecht University, gave a presentation on the meaning of games for healthy exercise. Monique Simons; “By using the power and excitement of technology and games, it’s not only possible for healthy behaviour to become the easier option but also for it to become the more exciting option.” Mark Sandmann, an alderman of the Municipality of Apeldoorn, performed the official opening ceremony. “Moon Trees is a technological feat by various regional entrepreneurs. Something the Municipality of Apeldoorn can be very proud of”, Mark Sandmann said.

Getting people to exercise

Springlab has already proven with previous projects that game technology can play a valuable role in getting people to exercise. Previously, their Active Cues Magic Table got people suffering from dementia active, and they created a green wave in the town centre with Flo bikes. Jan-Paul de Beer, chief at Springlab, has a clear mission: getting people around the world to exercise. He believes we were built to exercise and that exercise is vital for a healthy and happy life. “Moon Trees is based on computer games, but it is played in the physical world. This makes Moon Trees the superlative of a computer game, and it’s healthy too! We’re convinced Moon Trees will encourage children, teenagers and adults to get active.”, says Jan-Paul de Beer.

Appealing to gaming youngsters

Computer games are extremely popular among children and teenagers. So if you want to address them and encourage them to play outside, you can only do so by building a bridge between playing outside and gaming. “Programmers and game designers who usually make computer games have now focused on designing an outdoor game, using the most innovative technologies. For this game, you use an Internet of things network. The tree computers communicate wirelessly with each other. Also, this game is played in one of the most magnificent game décors in the world: the woods”, says Ciaran Barsema, managing director of Springlab forest.

A proper workout

The aim of the game is to earn as many points as possible in 45 minutes by conquering Moon Trees. Moon Trees demands more than sufficient physical effort and social-emotional commitment in order to meet the definition of sport. Ciaran Barsema explains: “Playing Moon Trees is a perfect alternative to the gym; it’s a proper workout. Also, as a team, you need to be smart in order to win.”

Teamwork by innovative regional parties

Moon Trees was developed thanks to the intensive collaboration of various innovative businesses from the Apeldoorn area. One of the parties is Ontwikkelingsmaatschappij Oost NL. As a fund manager, Oost NL has granted Springlab Forest a loan from a cultural loan fund in the province of Gelderland. Pieter Rhemrev, manager of the Capital business unit at Oost NL: “This fund is used to encourage innovation through the development of talented people and quality improvements in the cultural and creative sectors. Moon Trees encourages a healthy lifestyle through play. This means we are directly contributing to a healthier society and to local employment at the same time, both at Springlab Forest and Klimbos Veluwe. This enables Springlab Forest to lay solid foundations that will be able to support future growth.”

This week, the first players were able to test our game in Klimbos Veluwe. Not only to see the game in action before we go live, but also to take pictures and make recordings for the Moon Trees video.

A camera crew made sure all of the best moments were documented. Our test players were so absorbed by the game, they soon forgot all about the cameras. Moon Trees is so cool.
